Indulge in a relaxing ritual with this hand-cut jade tool that promotes a happier scalp and better hair.

You could say it began with a memorable scalp massage. One of those stress-melting spa treatments that left us deeply reinvigorated. Next came the science. It seemed every stylist and trichologist we spoke with was preaching the importance of stimulating blood flow to promote scalp health. And finally, social media. The wild world of #hairtok was abuzz with scalp massagers of all shapes and sizes. Intrigued, we set out to investigate what all the hype was about. Was there a tool worthy of a spot in our Scalp Care curation

Act + Acre’s Scalp Gua Sha comb first caught our eye because it is, simply, beautiful. Hand-cut from natural jade (sometimes referred to as the stone of luck and happiness), this objet certainly demonstrated vanity appeal.

The more we researched it, we learned that this tool not only looks lovely, but boosts the penetration of topical scalp treatments and promotes microcirculation, helping hair grow more quickly with healthy strength and vitality. This, plus the promise of deep relaxation provided by the massage made the VIOLET LAB rush to pick up the phone and kindly ask if we could please give it a try.

The gua sha is not a new technology–people have been using them for centuries, first as a medical remedy, and later as a beauty ritual for lifting, firming, and de-puffing the face and body. VIOLET STAFFERS were obviously familiar with these uses, but less so with how to incorporate one for our hair and scalps. Turns out, it was surprisingly simple and didn’t take long at all to see the benefits.

When the packages arrived, we dutifully followed the brand’s instructions–parting our hair (wet or dry) in several places and saturating the scalp with our favorite treatments (we recommend Act + Acre’s Cold Processed Scalp Detox, particularly for those who have product buildup). Then, starting at the forehead, we gently massaged the gua sha, teeth down, backwards to the crown of the head, repeating this process until we had covered the entire scalp, and relishing in the stimulating massage as stress seemed to evaporate.

Immediately, we noticed that our scalps felt clear of dead skin and product buildup, our serums and treatments absorbed more quickly, and our roots were naturally lifted. As we began committing to this practice several times a week, STAFFERS’ hair began looking significantly shinier and more lush, so we decided we needed to submit this deceptively simple tool to the Committee of Industry Experts for their invaluable feedback.

“This beautiful jade comb is deeply satisfying to run through the scalp and hair. Gua sha massage stimulates blood flow and circulation, and combined with the Act + Acre topicals, you have a wonderfully restorative at-home hair care treatment that promotes hair growth and health.”

—SOPHIE PAVITT, Esthetician

“I’m obsessed with this scalp gua sha! It feels like a soothing scalp massage and even helps with headache pain. I am reaching for it multiple times a day, totally addicting!”

“I really enjoy this gua sha. When used with scalp oil, it helps to evenly distribute the product along the scalp and root of the hair. The jade material and spacing of the prongs easily glide along the scalp (with or without oil) and it feels so therapeutic. I love using it before bed just for relaxation.”

—ANGELA HAZELTON, Hair Colorist

Testers found themselves loving both the experience and results of using this graceful tool, and were thrilled that, by using the curved edge, it could double as a traditional skin gua sha for depuffing and sculpting. With this jade comb taking up permanent residence on the vanities and nightstands of both STAFFERS and Committee Members, Act + Acre’s Scalp Gua Sha is officially VIOLET CODE APPROVED and has earned a place on THE SHELVES.

The VIOLET CODE is a process and set of standards by which VIOLET GREY’s Committee of Industry Experts separate hero products from the tens of thousands of options available to you on the market. The result is a curation that is truly the best in beauty from those who know best.
