The Violet Files / Lessons / packing rules from anya hindmarch

Craftsmanship, humor, and personalization are the three key words British designer Anya Hindmarch uses to describe her namesake accessories line. Launched with a singular supple leather bucket bag 29 years ago, Hindmarch's collection has since evolved to include a full range of handbags, stationery, coats, shoes, wallets, and, of course, her famous statement patches for self-customizing. Last week, London-based Hindmarch expanded her reach still further, opening her first Los Angeles flagship on Melrose Place, replete with a bespoke embossing bar.

But her obsession with organization (Hindmarch believes her middle name should be Compartmentalized) led to one of the designer's greatest claims to fame: a full collection of labeled makeup bags for every beauty need, which are a favorite of everyone from Vogue editors to jet-setting celebs like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Kate Moss. “The labeled bags were really born out of my need for an organized solution for packing and everyday life,” says Hindmarch. “I think organization makes people feel good and improves confidence. It's efficient and helps me work better--that's a real luxury.”

And with options that range from streamlined black Dopp kits to over-the-top snakeskin patch-embellished pouches, Hindmarch has every type of packing personality covered. Here--just in time for your holiday travels--the detail-oriented designer advises on beauty essentials for both the chronic overpacker and the die-hard minimalist. Read on for her tips.

A burning candle instantly makes any place feel like home. Traveling with one is quite decadent, but it can change the feeling of your hotel room—especially a candle that smells as fresh as this. Packing tip: To avoid breakage, be careful not stack it against any other glass.

I like to have hand cream on me at all times. This one is rich, but not oily, and it has great packaging. The cream lives in my brightly colored, easy-to-find pouch, which I place in my large handbag when traveling. My travel strategy always involves bags within bags. It has a very organized Russian-doll effect.

Hotel hair-dryers can be the best in the world—or the very worst, like when they whisper at you with low power. I like to come prepared, and this one is perfect. I pack all my fragile devices in individual dust bags, which help prevent scratches and cracking. Our dustbags have a stripe pattern, so they are easy to locate in your luggage.

Christophe Robin’s Purifying Scalp Scrub makes you look forward to washing your hair. It takes a little getting used to, but it’s reviving for both the hair and the spirit! To prevent spillage, I put my hair and body products in zip-top bags before placing them in my vanity kit.

Created by a fellow Brit, this face wash is as refreshing as it is cleansing, and I can’t go without. I decant it before packing so I don’t have to take the entire jar.

This conditioner is so soothing, and makes a perfect partner for the scrub. The scent is gentle and leaves your hair tangle-free. I also place this in my vanity kit, which is large enough to hold the contents of your bathroom cabinet.

It’s not really a packing thing, but I like to have my hair in a ponytail when I travel, and these hair ties are practical and discreet. I always appreciate hairbands that do not break my mane.
