When it comes to matters of personal appearance, the friendly skies aren't so friendly. Dry skin from stale plane air is as inevitable as a 45-minute TSA line. Jet lag gives rise to under-eye bags too large to store in an overhead compartment. And the unflattering cabin lighting could bruise even the healthiest ego. Perhaps the greatest injustice to befall those who dare to venture so far above sea level is hair static. Although admittedly not a universal condition (certain types seem inexplicably immune), the frizz induced by air travel -- a quite literal case of the flyaways -- is at best a nuisance and at worst gives the impression that your window seat came with an open window.
Fortunately, Los Angeles–based stylist Anh Co Tran (who counts Ginnifer Goodwin and Coco Rocha among his clients) has devised an easy three-step strategy for maintaining static-free locks from takeoff to landing. His expert tips and Violet Code–approved product recommendations, below.

BEFORE BOARDING: Skip the shower, says Tran. Even a hydrating shampoo or conditioner can strip hair of natural oils, making it drier and thus more prone to frizz. More important, use a moisture-rich styling cream pre-flight to stop the static at its source: dry plane air. Take a small dab and finger-comb it evenly through your locks. “I like Leonor Greyl Eclat Nature,” says Tran. “It’s lightweight, so it won’t weigh your hair down, but has enough tackiness to smooth flyaways.”

IN FLIGHT: Tuck a boar-bristle brush in your carry-on for onboard touch-ups. The bristles distribute essential scalp oils throughout your hair, leaving it shiny and smooth. Those looking for a more aggressive approach can opt to protect their locks beneath a hat or beanie (which can lead to hat hair, an equally troublesome quandary).

AFTER DISEMBARKING: Banish any flight-induced frizz with a few spritzes of texturizing spray. “I’ve tried every texturizing spray there is, and this is by far my favorite,” says Tran of the formula, which delivers a one-two punch of moisturizing oils (to prevent static) and hold (to tame flyaways).
