For the past week, makeup artist Pati Dubroff and actress Dakota Johnson have been emailing inspiration images back and forth. The two were brainstorming the best beauty look to complement the star-adorned Gucci gown Johnson planned to wear to the Met Gala, and David Bowie and Debbie Harry reference photos abounded. The outcome? Otherworldly emerald green eyes. “Dakota loves to have fun when it comes to fashion and beauty, so she's kind of a dream client,” says Dubroff. “The eyes include a pop of color, bright glitter, and a lash. This sounds like it could go all wrong, but it was all right.”

Before applying makeup, I massaged Dakota’s complexion to increase blood flow and relax her skin. Then I used primer in her T-zone to ensure that her makeup lasted all night long.

For a glowy complexion, I used a radiant foundation, starting at the center of Dakota’s face and working out toward the perimeter. Then I blended Surratt Artistique Blush in Parfait on the apples of the cheeks to give her a rosy flush, and swirled Laura Mercier Face Illuminator in Devotion over the top of the cheeks as a nod to the eighties.

First I covered any red areas on the face. For the eyes—which the look was all about—I used black eyeliner in the upper waterline to intensify the base of the lash, followed by a bright eyeshadow on the inner rim and slightly on top of the black liner. To make Dakota’s eyes really sparkle, I applied shimmering eyeshadow on the inner corner and lid, and finished with a dash of green glitter.
