“People like Jennifer Aniston have texted me so many times over the years, ‘When are you going to make me something that can make my skin like that?’” says the editorial makeup artist Gucci Westman. That, of course, refers to Westman’s on-set specialty: conjuring a healthy, sun-kissed glow that feels resolutely natural, as seen in her deep catalogue of Vogue covers and red-carpet work.
But is it really possible to bottle up such carefully wrought finesse? That has been the lodestar for Westman Atelier, which the makeup artist and her husband, the Rag & Bone cofounder David Neville, launched in 2018. The business of fine-tuning products wasn’t new to Westman, who previously held global artistic director roles at Lancôme and Revlon, but she set a particularly high bar for her brand: clean, intuitive formulas wrapped in streamlined chic.
Playing the boss means a continual stream of minute decisions. “What color should the pump inside the pump be?“ Westman jokes. ”Do I care? But, yes—I do care.” That eye for detail guides the product development, from the fan-favorite Baby Cheeks Blush Stick to the new Sun Tone Bronzing Drops, a genius liquid bronzer that’s simultaneously hydrating and matte. After all, she says, if “Charlotte [Tilbury] is known for eyes, and obviously Pat [McGrath] for innovation,” her calling card is complexion—making it bronzy, beachy, glowy, rosy, in an elevated way.” Sun Tone is nothing like the stereotypical orange-tinged bronzer; instead, its four flexible shades let you play with different levels of warmth, even on fair faces like Nicole Kidman and Anne Hathaway. “For the Golden Globes, I used it on Nicole, and the effect was so pretty and peachy,” she says. Westman values her professional experience as much as her real-life perspective: as a multitasking mom who looks to makeup for a boost of confidence, especially when applying it on camera for hundreds of thousands of followers.
