A candle that doubles as an objet d’art; a design piece that happens to be intoxicatingly scented. Whichever way you slice it, luxury home brand 1986’s candles are truly swoon-worthy and deeply joy-sparking. The vessels are made of hand-carved marble from Pakistan or hand-painted glass and shipped to Los Angeles where the wax is hand-poured. The designer-candle-maker behind the collection is Zahra Ayub, former PR director of British fashion house Vivienne Westwood. Upon discovering that she has scent synesthesia, a neurological condition that allows her to take a visual approach to scents, creating connections between memory and smell, Ayub developed the five 1986 fragrances, each named after memories of different places visited. Together, the vessels and the scent deliver a luxury home experience that is both timeless and statement-making.
