In 2003 makeup artist Rea Ann Silva created the world’s first edgeless sponge—a pink sensation beloved by makeup artists and beauty lovers the world over. Earlier in her career on set for one of the first television shows shot in high definition, Silva used air brushing to create flawless skin. While this was effective, lugging the air-brushing compressor around for touch-ups was cumbersome. Her solution was an egg-shaped reusable sponge that transforms with water into a pillowy cushion that expertly applies and blends makeup. Originally created for professionals, Silva knew she was onto something when the beautyblenders began disappearing from trailers and makeup tables. As Silva says, the sponge is “makeup’s best friend.”
